I walk down the office hall in South Hall. At the end room, on the left, is Bill sitting at his desk. He is eating a p&j sandwhich and drinking milk from a thermos cup. We chat about teaching business - English.
I am in a ranch house in Trumbull, Ct. My wife and son are in the hnospital. My 2nd son got hurt and I have to go to the hospital. Bill and Martha learn of my problems and the next day they come to my house and give me tons of lasagne to help me eat while I have t\his problem. They are always thoughtful and there when needed.
Strike. Our faculthy union is on strike. Bill is on the picket line. I think he is conservative but he is a strong believer in standing up for the issues confrontinig the faculty. And of course while most facutlhy are grousing, Bill is smiling and cheerful.
Summer. Bill has some kids visiting from the inner city. They had spent the summer--something the Winsors did over the years--getting out of the hot city and enjoying rural Connecticut. These returning young people do not forget how they were cared for by Bill and Martha.
Graduation. There is Bill in his robin's egg blue University of Columbia PhD gown...smiling, pleasant, cheerful.
Always. When I think of Bill I will always remember that smile, his cheerfulness. His goodness and gentleness. Always.
Bless you, Bill
Love Fred
