Beloved Father, Grandfather, and Uncle. Professor of English, Korean War Veteran, Accomplished Pianist
Dr. William T. Winsor, 83, of Litchfield and Watertown, passed away peacefully at home on Father's Day, Sunday, June 15, 2014. He was raised in Cranston, RI, the third child and youngest son of Edward Harrison Winsor and Hannah More Winsor, and is a tenth generation direct descendant of Roger Williams, the notable theologian and co-founder of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and graduated from Brown University in 1952 with a B.A. in Psychology, then from Columbia University in 1963 with an M.A. and Ph.D. in Modern British Literature.
Dr. Winsor was an Associate Professor of English at the University of Bridgeport from 1967 to 1992, serving a term as chairman of the English Department and was a founding member and two-term President of the American Association of University Professors, University of Bridgeport Chapter. He later worked as an Associate Professor of English at Central Connecticut State University and Naugatuck Valley Community College. He retired in 2009.
An Eagle Scout and an accomplished pianist from his youth, Bill was also an avid runner and athlete, as well as a brown belt in karate. He served from 1952-1954 in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Bill is survived by his wife, Martha E. Winsor, his five children, Julianna, Elizabeth (her spouse, Kong How), David, Andrew (his spouse, Noel), and Stephen, his sixteen grandchildren, Mallika, Jyotsna, Rachel, Dawn, Melissa, Mary, Lydia, Joshua, Jeremy, Daniel, Ethan, Sophia, Tristan, Amber, Louis, and Nicholas, nephew, Oscar, nieces, Carol and Carol Ann, and great-nephews, Oscar and Adam. He was pre-deceased by his brother Edward Harrison Winsor, Jr., his sister, Elice Hammond (Winsor) Shelton, and a granddaughter, Elynore Grace Pang.
Dr. Winsor was a dedicated patron of theatre, film, and the arts. He shared his passion for literature with everyone he met. He lived his life with thoughtfulness, integrity, and compassion towards all and was an honest, patient, and loving family man who will be sorely missed.
