JANE N. HANDLEWICH 1923 – 2015
Jane N. Handlewich, born Dec. 20, 1923 passed away on January 31, 2015 at Valerie Manor, after a long illness. Jane was born in Torrington on December 20, 1923, daughter of George D. and Mildred Scoville Newkirk.
She is survived by a daughter Louise J. Manteuffel , of Torrington, a sister in law Marion Newkirk, a niece Linda Spinelli, her husband Tony, and nephews James Newkirk, his wife Kathy, Thomas Newkirk, his wife Kim, and several grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two step daughters, Mary Ellen Maynard, and Elizabeth Handlewich. She was the widow of Erwin K. Manteuffel, and Robert M. Handlewich. She was predeceased by a sister Dorothy Newkirk, and a brother George H. Newkirk.
Jane was a graduate of Torrington High School, class of 1941, and the Executive School of Business, 1942.
During World War II Jane served as a Nurse’s Aide at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. She enjoyed a fifty year career with the American Red Cross, serving as Executive Director. She was a life time member of Center Congregational Church.
Jane was an avid volunteer and served on the Executive Board of the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, and the Torrington Historical Society.
Jane was an avid gardener, enjoyed creating beautiful needlework, and shared her home with several feline companions.
She will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Services are private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Torrington Historical Society.
