Obituary for Kurt Joseph Lyons

Kurt Joseph Lyons, 57 of Litchfield, CT and Falmouth, MA died peacefully in his sleep at his Mother’s home in Litchfield on May 4th.

Kurt was the youngest son of Kathleen H. Lyons, MD of Litchfield, and the late William B. Lyons, MD of Southbury, CT. He attended Litchfield elementary and junior high schools and Canterbury School in New Milford, CT, from which he received his high school diploma.

Kurt worked at The Hitchcock Chair Company in Riverton, CT before moving to Falmouth, MA, on Cape Cod. There he worked for several years at the Fishmonger Cafe in Woods Hole, becoming an accomplished cook and contributing to the management of a thriving local business. At the same time Kurt, a perfectionist, pursued his college degree. After leaving the Monger, Kurt followed his dream of working in Environmental Protection as a hydrologist. He was employed until 2013 by HydroGeoLogic, Inc., working with a field team monitoring soil and water contamination connected with the former Massachusetts Military Reservation.

Kurt was personable, caring and loyal. He had many friends in the Woods Hole area who knew and admired him for his work ethic, intelligence and unique sense of humor. Kurt loved to laugh and to make others laugh also. He was a gifted story teller. He loved his Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Lakers. He loved a good movie, and had a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of film from the last 40 years. Kurt was a keen outdoorsman: he was an accomplished windsurfer and skier, and loved nothing more than being out there. One of his nieces describes him perfectly: “Kurt was a good person. He struggled greatly in the last few years as we are aware… but his true character—passionate, loving, caring, zany—still shone through... He loved to cook, loved his dog, loved to tell stories of skiing and other outdoor adventures, and he cared about our family." Kurt will be greatly missed by his family and circle of friends.

In addition to his Mother, Kurt leaves his siblings, Karen M. Lyons and her husband Brian Flaherty, William B. Lyons, Andrea E. Lyons, Kathleen Lyons Wallace and her husband John, step-mother Joyce P. Lyons, half-brothers Ben Lyons and Michael Lyons, aunts Joanne Hausmann and Rosemary Martin, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Arrangements are private.
