Obituary for Winifred P. Tingley

Winifred Peters Tingley
Goshen Librarian for 35 years

GOSHEN- A service will be held Saturday for Winifred ‘Winnie’ Peters Tingley, 91, of School Hill Road, who died on November 30. She moved to Goshen in 1954 with her late husband, Harold ‘Bud’ H. Tingley, Jr.
Born in Stamford in 1925 to Frank and Clara B. Jones Peters, she attended Milford High School and UConn where she graduated in 1948 with a B.A. in English Literature. She married her Bud in September 1949.
Though a mother and homemaker, for most of her adult life Winnie also enjoyed her position of director of the Goshen Public Library. She retired in 1998 after 35 years of service to the town of Goshen. Following retirement she wrote and published several personal essays in the Litchfield County Times, gardened, traveled, knitted and attended 'Senior Social Hour' for competitive Scrabble. She was a long-time member of the Church of Christ, Congregational in Goshen where she sang in the soprano section of the choir.
Winnie loved reading and readers, ideas and words. Until recently she lived independently in the Goshen home that she loved. Always up on current events, Winnie would watch the evening news munching on a chocolate bar, and sipping her Manhattan, much to her caretakers’ dismay. The entire family wishes to thank the caregivers and professionals who lovingly supported her life at home.
Winnie had five children: Dale (late), Lois Peters of Litchfield, June Kelly of North Canaan, Hal Tingley and his wife Kandace of Goshen, and Jim Tingley and his wife PC Cary of New Orleans, LA. She leaves grandchildren Susan and Jane Tingley, Clara and James McCoy and Autumn Kelly, sister, Jean Stemple, and her brother and his wife, Dr. Donald and Mary Peters.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 3rd at 10:00 AM at the Church of Christ, Congregational in Goshen. Arrangements by the Rowe Funeral Home, Litchfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to Goshen Community Care and Hospice, P.O. box 202 or the Goshen Public Library, 42 North Street.
