Obituary for Richard Henry Weik

Richard Henry  Weik
Richard Henry Weik passed peacefully at home on August 17, 2016 with Edith, his wife of 58 years, by his side at age 90. Richard was born on February 24, 1926 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital to parents William C. and Laura Stoddard Weik. He lived his entire life at his family home on Apple Hill Farm in Lakeside. He took over the family farm from his parents and continued to operate the dairy and apple farm for many years while also working as a Morris school bus driver for 24 years. Weik’s apples were well known throughout northwest Connecticut and beyond.
Richard graduated from Morris High School in 1944. His class had a very successful senior year in athletics. In the fall of 1943, Morris won the Housatonic Valley League six man football championship. The 1943-44 basketball team won the Housatonic Valley League championships winning 19 games and losing 1 in the regular season. Richard was also the League High Jump Champion. He and his team mates were inducted into the Wamogo Athletic Hall of Fame in January of 2016.
Richard served on various boards and commissions in Morris over the years. He was a past member of the Beach and Recreation Commission, Sandy Beach Commission, and Morris Volunteer Fire Department, and Edith and he were leaders of the Morris Agricultural 4-H Club. He also served as the Fire Warden for the Town of Morris.
Richard was predeceased by his sisters Shirley Weik and Ruth Bemis and his brother William C. Weik, Jr. He leaves behind his wife Edith Peck Weik, his sons, Bruce Weik of Freedom, ME, Steven Weik and his wife Patricia of Bluemont, VA , Andrew Weik of Freeville, NY and Tom Weik and wife Lisa of Lakeside, CT along with seven grandchildren B. Grace, Patrick, Jacquelyn, Alexis, Juliane, Nolan and Collin, all Weiks. Two nieces, Sharon Bemis and her husband Kevin Hynes and Carrie Look and her husband Josh.
A memorial service will be held at the Morris Congregational Church on Monday the 22nd at 10:00 am. A private family burial will follow at the Morris Cemetery.
